The Sport of 3 Gun at Quinton Sportsmen's Club

The fastest growing and most exciting shooting sport out there right now is 3 Gun or multi-gun competitions.  If you are not familiar with 3 gun, you are encouraged to watch a match and learn before you try.  The best part is that you don’t really need any special equipment to start and anyone can play.  3 Gun consists of a set of courses in which you shoot three different guns – rifle, pistol and shotgun – at different stages and engage various short and long distance targets from various positions.  Generally, any rifle over .223 caliber is in (including PCC-pistol caliber carbine), and shotgun with 20ga or larger (using #6, #7.5 or #8 shot) will work and a 9mm or larger caliber handgun is good to go. We will follow the rules set by the Quinton Sportsmens Club listed here on the rules page.

Scoring is based on time and hits minus penalties, with each stage consisting of different scenarios and degree of difficulty.  Basically, the shooter who hits the most targets in the least amount of time wins. It’s very exciting, requiring a combination of safety, shooting speed and accuracy with different guns.

Remember, this is New Jersey so know our gun laws and magazine capacities:

  • Rifle - .223 and up, semi-auto is choice (bigger means more recoil and harder to follow shots), magazine capacity for semi-auto is 10 rounds, 150 rounds needed for a match.
  • Pistol – 9mm and up, semi-auto is choice (same as above, bigger means big recoil), magazine capacity semi-auto is 10 rounds, 150 rounds needed for a match.
  • Shotgun – 20 gauge and up, 12 gauge semi-auto is choice, magazine capacity for semi-auto is 6 in tube, one in chamber, no capacity limit for pump shotgun, bring 150 rounds, use maybe half (#6, 7.5, or 8) and 20 rounds of slugs.
